Openness, Transparency & Jim Whitehurst

A couple weeks ago we hosted a very special guest at the Atlanta JBoss Users Group – Red Hat CEO Jim Whitehurst. In 2010, we helped establish and host the Atlanta JBUG with local JBoss talent Wesley Hales and we’ve slowly grown the group to 150+ members. Back in January, we attended the Red Hat partner conference and during a one-on-one meeting with Jim, I asked him if he’d be interested in coming down for a talk to the group to pour some gas on the fire. True to his word Jim showed up at our office on May 15th and rolled up his sleeves to talk to the group:

It was a highly refreshing discussion and Q/A around the IT industry and everything Red Hat and JBoss of course. Jim was open and honest about every question raised. Topics included OpenShift, the renaming of JBossAS to Wildfly, Oracle’s stewardship of Java, and Red Hat’s recent acquisitions of FuseSource (JBoss Fuse & A-MQ) and Polymita (BPM). What struck me was that you would most likely never see the CEO of any large global technology company speak with a local users group, let alone allow the event to be completely unscripted. But that’s what Open Source is all about isn’t it?

The term Open Source began as a way to describe software source code and the collaborative model for how it’s developed. Red Hat has built a business around Open Source and its principles: Openness, Transparency, and Collaboration and its clear this culture goes all the way to the top. This is also why Shadow-Soft has focused its business in Open Source systems integration and all that it has to offer – total technology freedom, innovation and less cost.  Many thanks again to Jim Whitehurst for taking the time to come down and speak with Atlanta JBoss Users Group. You’re welcome anytime.

As a sponsor of next week’s Red Hat Summit, we are looking forward connecting with friends, customers and partners in Boston. Summit is the premier Open Source technology event to showcase the latest and greatest in cloud computing, platform, virtualization, middleware, storage, and systems management technologies. Please stop by and meet the Shadow-Soft team at Booth #1022.
